Are you in favour of what the UK government is proposing with regards to national ID cards.?

The Government wants to introduce ID cards on the UK public which will contain their biometric data and criminal records. They also propose to link them with the NHS, DVLA and Passport computers which mean you could access any information you want on a person with alarming ease.

Am I the only one who recognises this threat. The same company that caused the debacle with the passport computers a few years ago has the contract to run the scheme. They also hashed up the MOD system and are continuing to make a mess of the central NHS computer. All your personal details will be up for grabs by hackers. If kids can break into the pentagon and other U.S. government agency computers, what chance does this have. On top of that a private company will build and effectvely own the system.

5.6 billion is the estimate from the government which will invariably rise. On top of that they want us to fork out 200 uid for the pleasure. If we refuse, we risk a prison sentence. Discuss.

Personally I think it is all wrong, once again the deviant few mean that the rest of us law abiding citezens have to suffer. I dont want additional information about me stored anywhere. I dont want an ID card, and was under the impression that we lived in a democracy... erghh I dont recall voting on this. I further dont see why I should have to spend my hard earned cash on somthing I dont want, because some jumped up government forgetting about the fact there are people starving, people afraid to leave there homes, thinks that its a good idea. I dont have a spare 200 quid or what ever to pay for an ID card, and dont have the time to get one either as due to this governments poor managment I have to work to jobs to live a decent life style. Where will all of this end, linking our bank accounts to our cards, so that when we go in a shop they instantly know how much cash you have? a two tier system? Keeping tabs on your every move? they will be telling us what to wear? what to think? where to go next???? Well to be honest I am seriously thinking of getting out of this godforsaken country, it offers me nothing and this move is just another push... may be thats what the UK government wants... get the Brits out?????
Reply:The ID system is good in order that terrorists and criminals can be readily identified.
Reply:no im not
Reply:The ID cards are the culmination of tony blairs big brother experience.

Our rights and freedoms have been eroded stealthily to near zero. The truth is we arent even aware of every dark act of parliament passed.Only when we inevitably feel the need to protest against the government will it dawn how little we matter. The hungarian communist dictator ,rakosi , described it as the "slicing of the salami".Taking away our freedoms, piecemeal so as not to cause a reaction.

Well , the wise among us will have noticed the knee-jerk response to every incident ,serious or trivial. Its quite obvious that the reactions were in place already, just waiting for the incidents to come along.

ie.terrorist attack...ID cards ..90 day terror bill.

Yes, initially the ID cards will be optional...wont they?

Well, of course, aware that the id cards will be ultimately compulsory, all govt offices, banks ,dvla, post offices etc, will have to update systems in preparation,Therefore, life will be virtually impossible without one and so the vast majority of ppl will go out and buy a card "voluntarily" and of course the govt will cal it a great success.

Then if that isnt enough, we shall have per mile charging on roads using satellite tracking.Yes the govt will know where you are and when you were there.

Anyone who doesnt recognise the comparisons with orwells 1984 is a fool and walking blindly into blairs menacing personal utopia.
Reply:I have no problem in ID cards, however I don't think we should have to pay for them.
Reply:i personally think its an invasion of our privacy i think that every person shud have an id card but not one with all our information on it as u say if people can hack into top security computers this has no hope plus if as u say this is going 2 run %26amp; manged by a private company wats stopping them selling our details 2 other companies im with u i think its wrong %26amp; the id cards the government are proposing are an invasion of privacy
Reply:we are being dictated to ........ no smoking do this cant do that it all a load of xxxx

im NOT paying xxxx em .............
Reply:Give it a few years, then those of us with some computer experience can make a fortune clearing up the mess, like we did with the NHS and HMRC systems.
Reply:I'm in Texas and our Driver Licences already have that capability with a magnetic strip on them. Big deal!!! Many other states here in the US have the same thing!
Reply:Bamma from UK. Bamma say WOW how you so smart. Bamma say you only one to realize. Bamma think he want your autograph. Bamma say when your next book coming out. Bamma think you should work for government. Bamma say genius like you rare breed. Bamma say you shouldn't post this stuff. Bamma say they watching. Bamma say no be surprised if you disappear. Bamma say gone without a trace. Bamma say how smart man get caught in trap. Bamma wanna know.
Reply:I do not agree (very strongly) with ID cards this is just another invasion of privacy at the whim of corrupt politicians.

It is another SCAM and every ones information will be for sale to anyone who pays.

It will be a "hakkers" paradise and the access codes broken before the system is in operation or an employee of the private operating company sells them..

Non of the low grade governments or corrupt politicians in them in the UK have the integrity to operate such a system.

Get these imbeciles out of government and let us get to Proportional Representation as soon as possible then they wont have the power to change law so easily.

Did anyone vote for this - was this in the New Labour manifesto?
Reply:If prison is the only alternative for not complying, then I can do prison on my head. Three meals a day, plenty of gym, education, and if I work I can claim earnings credits; what a snip.
Reply:I'm with DENIS M on this one! Three square meals a day, excercise, training for a trade, roof over my head, cushey job in the prison library-or the kitchen, making new friends, playstation/xbox/computer use, then when you've done your time and are about to leave...the government will GIVE you an I.D card to take with you on your merry way-what bliss...its prison for me to be sure-see you there denis!
Reply:To be fair, if you really want to get information on someone these days how hard is it? How many people actively go about hiding there identities?

At the end of the day they are combining a group of documents and facts about you that are all ready on computers and accessible by people who could mistreat them anyway.

I sometimes have to carry up to 3 or 4 Official kinds of Documentation to prove who I am, I'm sure many others are in the same boat. Walking around trying to keep them all safe is a drama. I all ready carry a MOD id card everywhere I go and I have not misplaced it for years.

The government is going to release ID Cards. This is not a democracy, if it was... Would Britain be in such a state? Because everyone i speak to says it shouldn't be this way.
