Is it true that ALL Americans are going to be issued national ID cards by May of 2008?

Is it also true that these cards will contain RFID technology to track everyday activities? Is it also true that you will be required to carry these by law?

Is it true that ALL Americans are going to be issued national ID cards by May of 2008?
The answer is yes and no. The issue was passed by Congress in May 2005 and is called the Real ID Act. It mandates that states begin to issue the new IDs in 2008. States are not required by law to make the change, but any state refusing will doom their citizens. You will not be able to fly, take trains, visit federal building etc. The cards will have RFID chips implanted. RFID technology is already being used by government. All new passports issued have an RFID chip.

To those who say "who cares", I say this. I don't have a problem with the national ID card, because like you I have nothing to hide. However, the RFID technology is disturbing. These chips contain too much personal identifying information and anyone with a scanner can interogate these chips by just getting within range. This is a major security issue regarding our personal information. In an age where identity theft has become an epidemic problem these new uses of technology do not bode well for the future. It distresses me that so many people are just willing to overlook the risks involved. My question is this. Do the benefits gained by the issuance of these cards outweigh the potential future dangers of the technology?

To those who don't believe this is real I am posting a link. It has all the basic information about the program (when it passed, what it entails, etc.). If you don't like Wikipedia links a cursory search on Real ID Act on Google will provide numerous other sources on the subject.

Reply:it had ******* BETTER NOT BE.

this goes against the very idea of freedom. it's just like having to carry papers to show the SS...............

it might help with the illegal problem. i don't care- i say figure out something else like deporting their asses.

ETA: thanks, NONAME for the link. the only thing on that list that my state does not do is the chip. we already have to do all the other stuff to get a license. which i am fine with, it's that chip thing that's holding me back.
Reply:apparently hear say
Reply:I will fight it.
Reply:Yes ... at least I hope so that way those scumbags coming over here to do us harm will have more egg shells to walk on
Reply:Yes we need to it would stop all those illiegal aliens from crossing are border and make the voting process more affective and honest. Now i dont know about the RFID that would suck but i agree on the national ID card it`s no different that having a state ID . Think about it.
Reply:Who really cares? You already have a social security number. You must carry a state issued picture id or drivers license. Your cell phone has rfid, so does most cars produced today. There are even false teeth with these chips in them. This id will be just a new drivers license with more information on it. Hell you even have to have a ss and dl to get a bank account. In Oklahoma to get a new DL you must give a sample of DNA and etended fingerprinting. I just happen to agree. I also think when a child is born, their dna should be placed into a data base. This along with everyones dna sample taken to receive a drivers license. Sure would help in solving crimes.

Reply:I agree with the guy that said "Who cares?" I have nothing to hide. I was in the Army 20 years and carried a Federal ID card for the whole time and nothing changed, so again Who Cares? If will help keep foreign scumbags from causing us problems then I'm all for it. Seems to me that the only ones that will care are the Lawbreakers or Terrorists.
Reply:Where did you hear that? I have not heard it.

Can't imagine that the right would go for this, as the bible says that this is something that the anti-Christ will do.
Reply:I hadn't head anything recently though I think It's a good idea.

I don't know why anyone would be against it, with the possible exception of RFID [though cell phones use it] that is different than an ID Card or Drivers license how?
