Do you agree or disagree with the supposedly new ID cards?

The new ID cards they have been suggesting we carry or do you think another solution would be better? Say, like for the future the beginning of DNA testing from birth so this way people can be identified? (Although we need a solution at present)

The arguments put forward in favour of ID cards are largely a blind. There's little or no reason to believe that these would have a significant impact in fighting terrorism or dealing with illegal immigration and benefit fraud. I've been involved in this kind of area and there is no document that cannot be forged, given the will, money and technology. Terrorists and criminals running major fraud operations are the very people with the will and means to do this. And so they will. Sure ID cards might have an impact on, say, your more opportunist benefit fraud but to nothing like the extent necessary to justify such enormous expense. And don't for a moment believe that even the several billion pound cost presently projected won't rise to a still more astronomical number - this invariably happens with government IT contracts.





So ID cards will be hugely expensive and of marginal value in fighting serious organised crime. Exactly what does justify the cost ? It's all speculation really but best bet is probably a national database, storing large amounts of data for each of us. Does sound very 'big brother' I know but then we've now reached the point where chips in bins to check we're disposing of rubbish correctly are becoming a reality - bets are off, I'd say.





The interesting thing about a national database is what would be included ? Name, address, date of birth, place of birth, blood group, driver or not - maybe. But how about criminal record, relationship history, medical history, sexual orientation, employment, income ? How about more commercial information, useful to the private sector. If that sounds ridiculous just think about the ever growing amount of private sector involvement in the public services - cleaning hospitals badly, running prisons for profit. This might be alarmist and wrong but, think about it, what else justifies the cost ?
Reply:It is none of the government's business what I do, what I think, what I eat, drink, where I go, who I meet, what I think about them and anything else. HANDS OFF ME.
Reply:You can avoid the new ID card by simply buying a UK passport. If you do this in 2007, you will not have to buy the ID card until 2017.

I didn't like the retinal and fingerprint scans put on my driver's license as it it.

Reply:How do you know what the information collected is to be used for? In future how do you know that criminals won't be convicted by a computer alone matching the D.N.A found at a scene of crime (D.N.A evidence is not infallible). The absolute bottom line is that I will not have one of these cards. History shows that what you are told by a politician is only ever half the story of what is intended and while i have nothing to hide I do fear what the future holds in a country where the authorities hold data of what literally makes up you.





We need to remember that this is the digital age, if ID cards are going to solve all crime overnight and make the UK safe from terrrorists then I am the president of the U.S.A. Anthing that can be made or produced can be forged and at the end of the day what will stop a determined hacker from changing details of DNA online (the database would have to be online in some form or another to allow the various police forces and authorities to access it when required)





Why did we even bother fighting world war II when we have a government who has forgotten what freedom is.

Reply:I do not agree with having identity cards for Genuine UK citizens and its the Government that is making us have them due to the problems they have caused by letting so many illegal immigrants entering our country.


I think it is very wrong that we have to prove that we are British,instead,all those people who were not born in the UK should have to have them,and if they do not have one,they should be deported as soon as possible.


On the subject of DNA,I do agree that everyone should give a sample in order to set up a national data base,this will help with crime detection and.identification in cases of dead people found without I.D on them.

Reply:I have still have mine from when I was a child.They were issued in the second World War and believe were renewed until the early years of the 1960's.So it is not new.What is new concerns what the cards can now have on them.I believe your name address,your position as a Uk Citizen,blood group if you wish it to be available and Religion if you wish it to be known.If the information is incorrect it should be a criminal offence with serious consequences.There should be no charge.
Reply:first it will be id cards then it will chips inside our body . we are all ready living in a police state cameras every place you go . why do you think the government subsidised phone company's so we can all have Mobil phones . once the phone was registered they can tell exactly where we are going and where we have been . i see in some of the answers people are not seeing the big picture they say if you do nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear . as citizens we are all powerless already against the will of the government we pay taxes and they waste our money we have to have charity events to keep children's wards at hospitals open we have thousands living in poverty .but they go and give our money to crazy dictators so they can buy weapons to kill and torture innocent people they lied to us and tricked us in to going to war and now our solders are dying every day what power do we have to stop them NOTHING at all . ID cars are just another way of control the population . everyday we loose more and more of our freedom soon you will not be able to criticise the government in anyway . just remember what happened to Dr Kelly he was just telling the truth . soon it will be us .

and a database with finger print and retina verification for cards
Reply:ID cards are a huge invasion of privacy. To the people that say they have nothing to fear if you're doing nothing wrong, you're wrong about that. People, wake up. The World Government is getting closer. The naivete of the human race is astounding. Do a search on The Skull %26amp; Bones club at Yale University. It will open your eyes. And the idea of DNA testing from birth is horrible.

Reply:It assumes everyone is guilty until they can prove themselves innocent. If someone asks for my identification it basically means "I don't trust you enough not to lie about who you are". The whole thing is demeaning and beneath contempt.

I don't want a government that throws people in jail because they left their card at home... that's not what America was meant to be... that's exactly why America was created... to do something different than that...

What are the new ID cards supposed to do that your drivers license doesn't do?


Its all to help bring in the world government as soon as the Constitution can be dismantled and that is being done now.

It is not the average guy in the street they should fear, but the reaction to thier political actions by those people affected or killed.


I am adamantly against the invasion of my privacy any further.

The goverment can't even keep their own secrets without leaks to the press.

Reply:No I don't agree with them its not even tried and tested yet like any product they develop for the market, I think the problems that will arise with this are clear and easy, fraud, and it will cost alot and taxpayers won't want to pay for something that it is costing their wages more so why people want to spend more money, on something thats costing them more and more year round.





I think the only thing that the people want is to strive to have new ideas but its just another government advertising campaign to generate more of an income for the current government legislations and the provisions of providing electronic id isn't going to develop until the twenty 1st century.
