What's the big fuss over the REAL ID cards? How does this affect illegals and valid US citizens?

What is this card supposed to do? How does this card affect illegals and US citizens? What's the real reason for this card?Is it a good thing or a bad thing? How much are US taxpayers paying for this?

A real ID card would prove that you are a US citizen. Naturally, illegals could not get and use one..so they can't use any service where you'd need to show an ID.

Right now ID's are a tiny piece of plastic...even high school kids can make fake ones. Real ID's would be copy/fake proof.

You need a social security card to get a job, legally. Though it's so easy to make a fake one or steal one. Real ID's would put a stop to that.

And real ID's would make it easy to round up the illegals.....cop pulls someone over and they have no ID and say something like "No cerro, el passo delo''...snap, he is deported.

If they go the full route of a biometric activated computer chip type ID(so the card is only activated if you hold it in your hand) then it would put a stop to identity theft.

And of course the poor..um..hapless people would suffer too...as they are not quite..um..able enough to go and get the ID's the way normal citizens can. So the poor would not be able to get things that needed the ID. And the poor people would then be very sad.
Reply:Will illegals go in for ID cards? It could jsut be a sting by INS to deport them. Of course they won't. It's more posturing. We're paying way too much for even thinking that this is reasonable.

MOST US citizens already have some kind of ID. Drivers license, passport, something. They aren't that difficult to get. Making yet another ID mandatory seems rather ridiculous.
