Hi,
I'm moving to the US soon from the UK. When I arrive I will have to wait for my permanent residency card to be sent while my visa is processed and I was just wondering what I can use as photo ID in the meantime as I don't have a drivers license. Unfortunatley I'm a smoker and I read somewhere you have to be 18/19 to buy cigarettes in the US, which is fine as I'm 21 but I look quite young as sometimes I don't get served here cos they don't think I'm old enough to buy cigarettes and alcohol , even though you only have to be 16 for cigarettes/18 for alcohol here in the UK. Are there any 'id cards' you can apply for or will I get one automatically?
P.s I don't want to use my passport in case I lose it.
Thanks for your help
How do I get an ID card?
Well, if you really dont want to use your passport you might consider getting a stateside license as soon as you get here. You will need your passport for that though. If you have applied for a SSN with your visa, you wont be able to get a license until your SSN gets there. If you havent applied for one yet you're good to go.
If you dont want to do that or cant do that you might just have to use your passport anyways. If you're lucky it wont take that long to get your permanent resident card. Only took me 3 weeks to get mine. Good luck to you!
