When id cards in the uk come into force, can we refuse to have one?

or is there anyway of escaping the paperwork that will come before them

I will accept one if the government pays for iit but I fail to see why I should pay for it. in any event I will not carry it. I am a free born Englishman and I intend to stay that way and if i can find any way to frustrate ID I will do so
Reply:No, eventually you will not, and they want to know almost everything about you.
Reply:I think they will be compulsory. Personally I think they are an excellent idea. Haven't heard anything about paperwork yet.
