I need to make a copy of my student ID card. I was wondering if copying it will ruin the magnetic strip? I use the card daily for parking, vending machines, etc and would hate to have to go through the hassle of getting a new card cause the copy machine ruined the magnetic strip!
Anyone know?
Can photocopying ruin the magnetic strip on ID cards?
no you are fine dude if it make you feel better don't photo copy the side with the strip on it.
you need a magnit to wipe out the strip. They use them in stores to wipe at the strip that sets off the alarms by the doors so keep your card away from that.
hope this helps

Reply:i dont believe it does because only another magnetic field can ruin it
like sliding across the electromagnet at a checkstand
but im not sure if there is one in a photocopier
ask the librarian
Reply:they are safe
Reply:no....Copy machines use light and reflection.
Reply:Photostatic copiers work because there is a metal drum that is sensative to light inside the copier. A light is passed across the opject being photo copied, which causes the metal drum to heat up in the areas that the light doesn't shine on. In other words, the white areas of the image doesn't cause the drum to heat up, but the dark areas do. Toner is then sprayed onto the drum and is transfered to the copy paper. Color copiers use yellow, magenta, and indigo toner to create other colors by mixing them.
The strip on the back of your license is magnetic, the only way it will be ruined by photocopying is if it falls into the drum area and gets melted. :)
By the way, color copiers are required by law to have a computer chip in them that won't allow the color of money to be copied.
Reply:No, a photocopier uses a light to make the copy hence the name PHOTOcopier. It takes a magnet or magnetic field to mess up the data on your card. You should be photocopying the front anyway and usually the magnetic strip is on the back.
X-ray machines will not damage magnetic media either.
