Why are id cards supposed to be essential to national security?

In my mind, all these cards are good for are identifying the remains of suicide bombers through DNA and fingerprints.

Terrorists are not going to think,

"ooooops, I've got an id card, can't blow myself up today."

What 'security experts' are advising the government? You never make something absolute, you never put all your eggs in one basket.

Whats your opinion?

Why are id cards supposed to be essential to national security?
It's just another hidden agenda; every single politician is using the "terror paranoia" to get what they want.

Just read about the governor that wants to tax the Native American cigarettes claiming "not taxing them is security risk".

And like you point out; those people don't need an ID to do whatever they want, and they don't even need to jump a fence in Mexico all they need is walk from Canada; we have just given up our rights and freedom for nothing.
Reply:Papers! Vee Must See Zee Papers before you Pass!

The idea behind new laws requiring obtaining ID cards is to reduce counterfeit ID cards, increase security checks when obtaining ID cards to make sure the information provided is legitimate, and to establish a system that cross-references the ID information across all states.

This will give us a better assurance that ID cards and the information contained on them are true and correct. thereby allowing us to develop a false sense of security and an unquestioned trust of ID cards that will one day bite us in the ***.
Reply:They are for security reasons, I don't think they should carry as much information as the press say they will but it is about time they were introduced again, there are just too many people wandering around Britain with no way of knowing who they are or what they are doing here. If you do not have I.D then you to jail, and don't pass GO and you stay there until you or some one can prove who you are and what you are doing here.
Reply:Well I think its mainly because we are becoming a multi ethnic society and basically we have to know whose who.

Britain alone ......Not counting registered assylum seekers, has about 250,000 illegal immigrants arriving in Britain each year, who are just disappearing into there own communities. They arrive here on visa`s/passports and just dont go back home. They swap Identities and obtain false documents and work in family buisnesses.
Reply:ID cards are so stupid. We already have an ID document - it's called a licence and passport.

Instead we should be adding biometric information to these forms of ID - fingerprint, maybe even DNA.

Maybe ID cards can be available for those who don't have the above documents, but definately not compulsory for all.
Reply:Against ID cards. These wont stop Illegal Immigrants or suicide bombers. Do you think terrorists and suicide bombers will be worried about a wee bit of paper with a pic on it.
