Why outrage over national ID cards when we already have them?

I was listening to this radio program last night and this guy was going on about how the gov is trying to get us to have national id cards.

Now whether I agree with him or not is a different story. The thing that I am curious about is why are so many people complaining about national ID cards here in the U.S. when we already have them...Drivers licenses.

Maybe I'm wrong but a drivers license is supposed to be just that, a license to operate a vehicle. However in practical usage it has become a national id. granted each state has different ids but still the point stands. If you apply for a job, or try to buy beer or even for some transactions at banks and millions of others things, you have to show a drivers license. what do any of these things have to do with you operating a vehicle? nothing?

So I don't disagree with people being outraged about a national id, I just have to wonder if we're blind to the fact we already have one!?!

Why outrage over national ID cards when we already have them?
Complete loss of privacy. The SS card is not nearly as intrusive as the coming ID's.http://www.newswithviews.com/Levant/nanc...
Reply:I don't see a problem with a national ID.
Reply:a drivers licences is not a national id card as you think, what if you don't drive? i have shown my veterans id card as id, it has my picture on it and it's from a federal agency. but now what was not mentioned in the gov plan is that if you don't have one you can't get on a plane or that if your state adopts not to go along with the plan no one will be able to leave from that airport? does that sound fair? by the way there is a national id in place and it starts when you are born it's call a social security card, and we all know how great that works?
Reply:The diference is twofold: first, Drivers licenenses are state isued.

Seccond--the federal government is taking away your right to travel if you don't have one--for starters.
Reply:The ID that keeps track of us is the Social Security number.
Reply:if this national id you are talking about is called the real id the point is to slowly get people use to the fact that we are going to be tracked by a implanted chip so they are screwing us slowly so we can get use to the idea of being tracked their is a much bigger picture are you ready for it hell yeah we should be upset they are violating a privacy and that id is the beginning when you are cheating on your wife they know where you are at there are no more personal spaces or privacies and if you dont have your id when asked for do you really think you are going to get a slap on the wrist or more to understand the true meaning of this check out youtube.com and search new world order and you wont believe your ears and eyes i can go on and on but it is something else to see a video of events leading to this point check it out
Reply:I completely agree with you ... State issued Driver Licenses are accepted as valid ID in all 50 states and DC. Does seam we already have a form of Nationally accepted ID the only thing it misses is proof of citizenship.

I guess I maybe naive but I don't see what all the fuss is about ... What is wrong with having a Federal Issued National ID card with a photo, name, age, and address on one side, then add proof of citizenship along with organ donor preference on the back??

After all the way I understand it before long most Americans will need a Federal Issued Passport anyway ... especially if they ever want to travel freely out of the country and still be able to get back home.
Reply:There should be no problems if your an AMERICAN citizen!! Plus drivers lic. aren't the only national I.D. Think about it !! Military records so on. There are tons of ways to prove who you are. It is just the question as to what people will except !!!!
Reply:My wife is Russian she had two passports; one for international travel and one as a national ID. If the natl ID card can not be replicated then I am for it. A drivers license should be just that. you can travel anywhere in America with out a license just not drive, get a hotel room or open a banking account so good luck. A driver license is tax for a privilege but you can always get a state id if you do not wish to drive. the chip thing will never happen and I draw the line at that one.
