Do you have to have a full sex change to change the gender on your id cards?

like what if you change your name and live your life as a male but still have female body parts can you still have your id cards to state male as your gender

Do you have to have a full sex change to change the gender on your id cards?
You need to have the certificate from the Surgeon that preformed the surgery to get your Passport or birth certificate changed.

A general name change will alow you to get a ID and you can change your name for SS... but.... Social Securtiy will not change your gender designation until after surgery... the card does not show gender... but they do report the card number, name of person and gender to employers.
Reply:ive watched a few episodes about trangenderism on discovery but that doesnt make me an expert. but i do know a couple of the people i saw were able to change their ids and social security cards after they had been living as the other sex for a certain amount of time- that was without the surgery.
Reply:every where it is different

talk to your local court house to see what you can do where you are as every where is different
Reply:Depends on the state. In California you can for sure, and I know you can legally change your social security Card. The only ID I know you need a full sex change for is a Passport.
Reply:In New Zealand we can change our gender on many cards/papers and with many businesses, however getting your gender changed on ones birth certificate or passport can be a very long, frustrating process even when legally we can.
Reply:It depends where you live.

In the UK, you can obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate without having had any surgery (there are other criteria that have to be met, but surgery isn't a requirement); this allows you, among other things, to change all legal identity documents (including your birth certificate) to the correct name and gender.
