Why are some people against a national ID card?

Wouldn't this in conjunction with a centralized database be a great way to make sure only legal workers are hired? What are the downsides to a national ID card with centralized database?

Why are some people against a national ID card?
You trust government way to much. You should invesyigate how deep the government's hands are already into the Job's service database
Reply:well democrat/liberals claim it would discourage their voters blacks, hispanics, and the elderly, thus disenfranchise the voters, but i ask do these democrat voters not have i.d. to cash any form of government check, payroll check, buy beer, smokes, buy car insurance,is not i.d.,(i.e.D.L.)needed to do any of these things? but in reality it would expose voter fraud on the part of the democrats which in turn would seal their demise.
Reply:Well, number one, if they would allow all of our immigration laws to be enforced, there would be no immigration problem. A national ID card is one step away from being branded by your home country and being scanned every time you buy something, go on vacation or whatever.
Reply:I'm fine with it but there are privacy and ID theft ease issues. One problem with databases is that we are seeing a lot of information from them stolen. It would have to have security requirements.
Reply:It is just another tool for Big Brother to keep an eye on you and what you are doing. I call that invasion of privacy. The same with all the CCTV cameras the UK is installing. Pretty soon you won't be able to go for a pee without someone watching you and knowing what you are doing.

I would vote against National ID cards in a referendum.
Reply:Have you ever seen the movie 1984? If not, watch it, but good luck renting because no one carries it anymore. It's a movie about a 'big brother' type future-america where food is rationed, people are brainwashed and segregated and all decisions are made for them. They're also tracked everywhere they go, their days planned for them to the minute.(Similar to Soylent Green, if you haven't seen that one either, good luck finding it.) It's scenarios like the one in this movie that have so many people opposed to a national ID card.

Personally, why do I need one when I have a passport and a license AND a social security card? If you can't figure out who I am from these 3 pieces of identification, how is one more card going to help? It borders on privacy invasion. The US government already wants to know everytime I leave the country and come back into it. They already want to know everytime I get on a plane and rent a car or check out a book from my local library or use my credit card or stay in a hotel room or borrow money. A notional ID card, in my opinion, serves no further purpose than a passport, state ID and/or social security card other than allowing the government of this FREE COUNTRY to follow me around. Not that I have a problem with being followed, I'm not doing anything illegal. I just wonder WHY everyone's so interested in ME and why is the number of times I rent 'Schindler's List' so important?
Reply:I honestly dont have a problem with the card; if the government 'wants to find you to take you away' they will find you regardless of a card or not.
Reply:will this card be stamped on our foreheads or forehands

Reply:I think people associate it with one world government conspiracy theories. I love the idea of combining all cards and numbers into one and having a picture on it. If everyone is fingerprinted and photographed and get a card regardless of citizenship I think it will reduce ID fraud as well. IE anyone visiting, living in and a citizen of the US would have to be fingerprinted and photographed and carry the card. And it would say who they are, where they're from, their status, etc. It's such a hassle to have to pull out a million different cards for every single thing. When it's all through the government whether SSN or driver's license, or medicaid or whatever. It should all be on one card. If you get government wages or benefits it should go through the same card. And then they can focus on that issuing agency to prevent fraud and it would be so much simpler.
Reply:it's fascist.
Reply:Social Security Cards are supposed to be the centralized database to insure that only legal workers are hired. However, because people break the law and hire illegals to work, it no longer works! The people or companies that don't wish to pay a fair and honest wage would find a way to get around only hiring people with a national ID card as well. Face it...Locks were made to keep honest people honest.
Reply:We HAVE a centralized database call our Social Security Card.

Yeah...you are well on your way to supporting a North American Union between Mexico, the USA and Canada....

HEY!!! Why don't we just cut to the chase and make everyone get micro-chipped then they can follow us everywhere! Yeah!
