National ID CARDS?

should all US citizens be required to carry id cards? what facts could i use in a debate that would contradict the other team who is for them??

National ID CARDS?
National ID cards already exist so you probably cannot present an argument that would stand up. Social Security numbers track a person from birth to death, so about the only argument you could come up with would be that they would create a redundant system since we already have a national ID in place.
Reply:no, that is rediculous.... next thing everyone will be chipped andrun through scanners to validate entry to and from areas....we are free and should stay free, of monitoring and government big brother stuff

since we have laws to protect our freedom, unless we commit a crime or there is a valid suspicion that we commited a crime there is no need to identify a citizen for any reason.....
Reply:Yes, why not?

Reply:I don't believe there are any "facts" to support either side--pro or con.
Reply:I don't like the idea of having to show an ID to law enforcement for no valid reason (like someone who is in a neighborhood where they don't fit in demographically). I would think that constitutes unreasonable search and seizure.

That said, I do like the idea of something such as the "Real ID" driver's license and producing a valid ID in order to vote.

Think about it, there are certain things involving security (such as boarding a plane or entering the country) where it is reasonable to verifying a person's identity. It also seems reasonable for a person to prove that they are eligible to vote (all other major countries require this). But I am very uncomfortable with the idea of producing ID on demand for no good reason.

As for privacy, if you have On-Star, EZ-Pass or a cell phone, your whereabouts can be tracked very easily and these means have already been used in divorce cases and to exonerate accused in criminal cases. I personally like the idea of being able to prove my whereabouts. Regarding medical records and other personal information, the plan only allows personal information on a need-to-know basis, and medical records are strictly controlled under HIIPA (even military personnel medical records, so I doubt these would be linked to a person's driver's license).
Reply:is a waste of time we alway have them ss and driver lic....... so whats a card going to do
Reply:Privacy - the government has not proven very good at keeping databases secured. If someone hacks the national database, they have all the data.

Cost of switching over - if state DMVs have to go to a new system and new equipment, who pays for it? The federal government (as in, every single US taxpayer, including those in states that don't need to make expensive changes)? Or the individual states (in which case, once again, the federal government has called for an expensive change, but dumped it on the states to figure out how to pay for it) - and it still comes out of taxpayers' pockets.
Reply:National ID Real ID whatever you want to call it is simply more intrusion into our lives. The argument is:

Does the government need to track it's law abiding citizens?

Why do they need medical information? Eugenics? Why do they need ready access in the field to gun ownership? Eventual door to door seizures? Why do they need a populace under such tight control? Because we are the roadblock to their attaining complete power.

Don't buy into the national security argument. It's all just control by fear tactics. The problem is, the sheep at the perimeter of the flock are reporting on the fence construction, but they can't be heard in the middle of the flock.

I sometimes wish I lived in the middle and could just spend my life blissfully bah ing away with the crowd. But I can't.

The fence is being built around you and soon they'll hang the gate. Move to the perimeter and have a look and spread the word.
Reply:The current plan is to include access to medical, financial, gun ownership ect. in the ID. I amn against the ID- biggest reason....why does a cop need to know my credit score or medical history. Cops are dirty in every town, wait till they start abusing the info gained through National ID!!
