What countries do I need just a retired ID card and which a passport?

I have been navigating through web sites, and I cannot find any info on when I get a military hop, which countries I can enter with just my retired ID card and which ones I will need a passport

You can't travel on a military ID unless you are active duty and on orders. If your not active duty and not on orders then you must use your passport.


Even myself as an active duty military member cannot travel to foreign countries for business on just my military ID alone, I have to have orders to accompany my AD military ID, otherwise I have to use my passport when on personal vacation time. You will always have to carry your passport. Plus using your passport lets the US keep track of you when you leave the country. That way if you were to go missing, over a period of time the US could come looking for you.
Reply:UNless you are on military orders, any military members or families using military (or commercial) flights to travel outside of the US must have an American passport. Military ID's are no longer acceptable when traveling for personal pleasure.
Reply:Passports are required for ALL countries. military IDs are no longer valid, not even if you are on orders.
Reply:The reason you can't find info is that you have to have a passport! For many reasons and more that others have listed. JASiege has it right...... even if active you would need orders to travel w/o a passport. In most cases (say a permanent move) you get a passport.





Even if it was possible consider this. When retired you sit at a certain place on the list of who gets the next MAC flight. What would happen if you get near the bottom and can't get a flight for 3 days? No passport would mean you have no option to take a civilian flight.





Most countries require a passport to enter regardless. They want to see standard ID not a military one to enter. Some Caribean ones are allowing exceptions but it is only temporary. And you still have to have a passport to re-enter.





Then there is the thing regarding if you have your IDs stolen. With no registered passport the Embassy will be of no help. It can be done but you better have enough money to sit tight for WEEKS. If something happened to you..... same thing. The embassies hand will be tied in many respects.





Plus in most places to check into a hotel you have to have a passport. To make purchases on your US debit or credit card they will ask for a passport. In many places to exchange money (especially where you will get a good rate) they will ask for one as well. Yes you can get money out of an ATM but you will pay bigtime!





Bottom line...... you need a passport. If you throw enough money at it you can get one in a week regardless of the back log. If you have no real plans just apply for one. It's good for 10 years so just get it over with.

Reply:You have to have a passport for all countries now. That changed with 9-11. If for no other reason, you have to have it to get back into the US.





I added a site I found that has some countries requirements below. Overall, the website reccomends you contact the terminal for specific requirements to countries, but most of it is geared to active duty. They can give you the best answer.

To return from a country, you have to go through Customs, even on a military hop. Even on your website, with the exception of the Carabean when you only need proof of an aplication, you must have a passport to re-enter the US.
Reply:Actually I would recommend carrying a passport just in case. I have received bad info before and some customs offices change their policies without warning.


Passports aren't very expensive. Better safe than sorry.
